How it works
A plug-in solar system has three parts: a solar panel (typically 200–400 watts), a microinverter that converts the panel’s DC output to AC, and a safety-certified cable that plugs into a wall outlet. When sunlight hits the panel, it generates electricity that flows through the microinverter and into your home’s electrical circuit. Your appliances use that power first before drawing from the grid. The result: your electricity meter slows down, and your bill drops.
Plug-in solar does not require connection to a utility grid account, a dedicated circuit, or any modification to your home’s wiring. The system is designed to work with a standard 15- or 20-amp household outlet.

You need at least one of the following: a balcony, a patio, a south- or west-facing window with a sunny ledge, or a yard where you can set up a ground-mounted panel. North-facing spaces generally don’t generate enough output to be worthwhile.
Is it legal?
As of mid-2026, five US states have enacted laws explicitly permitting plug-in solar without landlord or utility approval: Utah, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, and Maine. Three more bills — California SB 868, the New York SUNNY Act, and Connecticut HB 5340 — have passed their legislatures and await governor signatures. Active legislation exists in over 20 additional states.
In states without a specific law, the picture depends on your lease and your utility. Many utilities tolerate plug-in systems, and many landlords don’t object. But you don’t have a legal backstop if they do.

How popular is it?
Germany leads the world in plug-in solar adoption. As of mid-2026, Germany has over 1.5 million registered balcony solar systems (called Balkonkraftwerke), a number that has grown rapidly since the country passed a renter’s rights law in 2024. The Netherlands, Austria, and Switzerland have also seen rapid adoption. In the US, Utah’s 2025 law opened the market, and the legislative wave of 2026 is expected to accelerate adoption significantly.
