Beyond the Panel: What’s Actually Shipping in Plug-In Solar Hardware

Every plug-in solar tracker on the internet, including some new ones, covers the same state-law ground. Less covered: the hardware itself is moving fast, too. We spent this piece checking what’s actually shipping versus announced versus rumored in balcony solar tech — batteries, monitoring apps, wattage, and certification — and hedging anything we couldn’t independently verify.

Storage Is Real — But Mostly Overseas So Far

The biggest genuine shift in plug-in solar hardware this year is batteries. Instead of feeding every watt straight through to your outlet the moment the sun hits the panel, a growing number of products now let you store daytime generation and use it after dark. Here’s what we could verify is actually shipping versus merely announced:

  • EcoFlow STREAM Ultra — Shipping (Utah only)

    A 1.92 kWh LiFePO4 battery with a built-in microinverter, listed around $2,399 (early-bird pricing has run as low as $1,459), stackable up to 11.52 kWh across six units. This is the one storage-integrated plug-in product we found actually sellable and installable in the US — and only in Utah, under the specific allowances of HB 340. EcoFlow has said it expects to expand elsewhere in 2026; as of this writing, we found no confirmation that’s happened yet.
  • Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4 Pro — Shipping (EU only)

    Pre-orders opened June 12, 2026 for a 5 kWh battery pairing with up to 5 kW of solar input, priced at €1,999. It plugs into Anker’s existing balcony ecosystem, which pairs a 600/800W WiFi microinverter with an optional Solarbank battery that Anker’s own marketing claims pushes self-consumption to roughly 90% — a manufacturer figure we haven’t independently verified. Not sold in the US as of this writing.
  • Zendure SolarFlow 2400 Pro — Shipping (EU only)

    Launched February 2026: a bidirectional AC balcony system with battery capacity expandable from 2.4 kWh up to 14.4 kWh (16.8 kWh in premium configurations). Zendure has been explicit that its 2026 push is focused on Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Benelux — not the US.
  • Marstek Venus E series — Shipping, limited availability

    A 2026 lineup spanning a 2 kWh Venus E Mini up to a 10 kWh Venus E Max, pitched as scaling from balcony storage up to whole-home backup. Marstek’s earlier balcony-specific battery, the Venus D, sold out after its 2025 launch; a company representative told press to expect wider availability in 2026 — a company statement we’re passing along as-is, not confirming.
Why we’re hedging this section

Nearly all of the storage-integrated activity we could verify is happening in Europe, where balcony solar has years of head start. In the US, we found exactly one product — EcoFlow’s STREAM Ultra — actually available to buy and install, and it’s restricted to Utah by state law, not a nationwide launch. We found no credible reporting of a storage-integrated plug-in kit that is both UL 3700-relevant and sold outside Utah today. Treat any broader claim you see elsewhere about US battery-integrated balcony solar with real skepticism until you can point to a specific state where it’s actually legal to install.

The Monitoring App Is No Longer a Feature — It’s the Baseline

APsystems’ EZ1-LV, which we covered in our certification story this week, is a useful example of where monitoring has landed: local Bluetooth pairing for immediate readouts, plus built-in WiFi for cloud logging through the company’s AP EasyPower app, which tracks up to four units at once. That mirrors what’s been standard on rooftop microinverters like Enphase’s for years. The honest read here is that this isn’t a frontier — it’s table stakes. Virtually every 2026-era plug-in product we looked at ships with some form of phone-app generation tracking. The competitive fight has moved on to storage and certification; monitoring is just expected now.

Wattage: Hardware Already Outpaces Most State Caps

Europe has settled on 800W as its ceiling — Germany’s DIN VDE V 0126-95 spec, finalized in December 2025, caps balcony systems at 800W AC with a standard Schuko plug, and the UK’s own plug-in solar law, taking effect August 27, 2026, lands at the same 800VA limit. Most US state laws cluster around 1,200W. Colorado is the outlier: HB26-1007, signed May 7, 2026 and effective January 1, 2027, allows up to 1,920W per address — about 60% higher than every other state, with conditions attached (one system per address, no daisy-chaining multiple kits together, automatic shutdown during outages, and UL certification required).

What we found interesting is that hardware capable of exceeding these caps already exists on spec sheets. Some microinverters are already rated well above 1,200W — MUST’s PM-series microinverter lists up to 2,000VA on the manufacturer’s own product page (we haven’t tested this ourselves), and EcoFlow’s STREAM Ultra accepts up to 2,000W of solar across its MPPT inputs even though the AC output it actually delivers to your outlet is governed by whichever state cap applies. In practice, the ceiling right now looks more regulatory than technical: components capable of higher continuous output exist, but state law — and in Colorado’s case, utility interconnection rules that haven’t been finalized yet — are what actually gate how much of that capacity reaches your wall outlet.

Certification: UL 3700 Isn’t the Whole Story

We’ve covered the UL 3700 certification race in detail elsewhere on this site — UL Solutions published the standard in December 2025, opened its certification program January 8, 2026, and APsystems is currently the only company claiming a genuine third-party certification, a claim we’re still treating as credible-but-unconfirmed pending independent verification against CSA Group’s own listing database. Two things worth adding to that picture:

  • Colorado’s meter-collar requirement

    Beyond product certification, Colorado’s law requires its Public Utilities Commission to finalize interconnection rules by December 31, 2026 that explicitly allow customer-owned “meter collar” adapters — hardware installed between the meter socket and the utility’s billing meter. That’s a utility-side interconnection mechanism, not a product safety standard, and it’s a preview of the kind of state-specific plumbing that may accompany higher-wattage laws going forward.
  • The NEC question — genuinely unresolved

    We looked for a formal National Electrical Code proposal addressing plug-in solar and did not find one on record from NFPA, the code’s publisher, as of this writing. Several secondary sources speculate the next NEC cycle, opening in 2029, could be the moment plug-in solar is formally addressed in the code. We’re flagging that as speculation from commentary, not a confirmed roadmap — we couldn’t verify an actual submitted code proposal, and we’re not going to present one as pending when we can’t point to it.

What Comes Next: Honestly, We Found Less Than We’d Like

We went looking for credible, sourced analyst commentary on what plug-in solar hardware looks like in 2028 or 2029. Mostly, we came up short on hardware-specific forecasting — what exists is legislative and market commentary, not product roadmaps, and we’d rather say that plainly than manufacture predictions to fill the section.

The one forward-looking figure we found worth citing, with a caveat: Solar United Neighbors, a nonprofit that advocates for distributed solar access, has forecast plug-in solar costs falling from roughly $3/watt today to under 60 cents/watt within two to three years of enabling legislation reaching a critical mass of states. That’s a cost projection tied to legislative momentum and manufacturing scale, not a hardware forecast — and it comes from an advocacy group with a stake in the technology succeeding, not a neutral market analyst, so we’d weight it accordingly.

The one hardware trend we’re comfortable calling a real pattern, because we can point to multiple shipping products showing it: convergence. EcoFlow’s STREAM Ultra and Zendure’s SolarFlow line are both already selling panel, microinverter, and battery as a single integrated unit rather than three separate purchases. If that pattern holds, the next few years of plug-in solar hardware probably look less like “bigger panels” and more like fewer, denser boxes that do generation, storage, and monitoring together out of one enclosure. Beyond that specific, verifiable trend, we don’t have credible sourcing for more specific predictions, and we’re not going to invent any.

Our Take

The technology is moving faster than most coverage of this category acknowledges, but not evenly. Storage-integrated systems are real and shipping — almost entirely in Europe, with exactly one narrow US exception in Utah. App-based monitoring has already become a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator. Wattage headroom exists in the hardware well before it exists in state law, and Colorado’s 1,920W cap is likely to be a test case for whether utility interconnection plumbing can keep pace with legislative ambition. Certification remains a single manufacturer’s claim away from being fully settled. None of this changes our standing advice: buy a UL 1741-certified kit today, watch UL 3700 and battery-integration claims carefully, and don’t assume something marketed in Europe is available — or legal — where you live.
