Where to Actually Buy Plug-In Solar Right Now

Three things changed about buying plug-in solar this summer, and the one nobody is telling you is that the obvious place to shop has quietly become the worst one. Here’s where the good hardware actually lives in September 2026, what it costs, and the December date that should shape your timing.

Start here: five ways to buy, and who each one is for

There is no single best kit, which is a boring answer, so let’s make it useful instead. Almost everyone buying plug-in solar right now falls into one of five routes, and the right one depends less on the hardware than on what you’re optimizing for: price, certification, evenings, or convenience.

Route 1 · Cheapest per watt

The best hardware-per-dollar we can find anywhere in the US. Two panels on an APsystems EZ1 microinverter, shipped from Texas, currently discounted 18–27%. No certification claims on their pages, which we’d rather they made — but the EZ1 inside is the same inverter carrying the UL 3700 mark.

Best if: you want the most watts for your money and you’re comfortable buying direct.

Route 2 · Cheapest to start

Bright Saver

$285 for 180W · $414 for 360W

A California nonprofit that sells kits at cost with a $29/year membership, and went nationwide in July. They ship with the new Hoymiles HiFlow Pro, they’re honest that the assembled system isn’t certified as a whole, and they refuse to ship to New York, Maine, or Vermont because of it. That refusal is the most trustworthy thing anyone in this market is doing.

Best if: you want the lowest possible entry price and don’t mind a wait — next shipment is mid-October.

Route 3 · Build it yourself

Hoymiles HiFlow Pro + your own panels

$153 per microinverter

Launched July 15 and the first plug-in microinverter in the US carrying UL 3700. Each unit handles 360–500VA and up to four run in parallel for 1,200W. Buy the inverter, add panels locally, and you get the best certification story in the category for the least money — if you’re willing to assemble it.

Best if: you’re handy, you care most about certification, and backordered-to-late-October doesn’t scare you.

Route 4 · Sun after sunset

EcoFlow STREAM Ultra

$1,399, down from $2,399

The battery path: 1.92 kWh of storage, expandable to 11.5, so the afternoon’s sunshine is still there at seven in the evening. Two catches worth knowing before you fall in love — it’s sold out on EcoFlow’s US store as we publish, and their own page says installation is currently permitted only in Utah.

Best if: your evening rates are brutal and you’d rather store the sun than sell it back.

Convenient, returnable, and right now the thinnest shelf in the category. Every name brand has gone dark: Zendure, Anker’s RS40P and Renogy’s 640W kit are all “currently unavailable” at once. What’s left is two real kits and a long tail of no-name inverters. See the section below before you click anything.

Best if: you want returns and two-day shipping more than you want the best price.

What changed this summer

A nonprofit reset the floor. In July, Bright Saver — a California nonprofit — went nationwide selling kits at cost: $285 for 180 watts, $414 for 360, with a $29 annual membership. Canary Media worked out that lands around $1.23 a watt including membership, against roughly $2.60 for rooftop. No commercial vendor has matched it, and the fact that the cheapest entry point in American plug-in solar is a nonprofit tells you something about how young this market still is.

The first certified inverters arrived. Hoymiles launched the HiFlow Pro on July 15, and it and the APsystems EZ1 are now the first plug-in microinverters in the US carrying UL 3700, the safety standard written specifically for this category. Environment America called it the first national safety certification for plug-in solar. One honest caveat we’ll keep repeating: Hoymiles’ own press release says “UL 3700-compliant,” while Electrek and Environment America report CSA certification. Neither certificate number is public. We’ve asked.

The Amazon problem

We checked every plug-in solar listing on Amazon US on September 4, and the picture is not good. Every name brand in the category is unavailable at the same time. Zendure’s SolarFlow kit: currently unavailable. Anker’s RS40P balcony kit: currently unavailable. Renogy’s 640W kit: currently unavailable. EcoFlow’s STREAM line has never been listed there at all — search for it and you get power stations, plus a cottage industry of third-party dust covers for hardware Amazon doesn’t sell.

What’s left is a long tail of $130–330 microinverters from sellers you’ve never heard of. Some are fine. Some are not: one popular listing states in its own copy that “the inverter is not UL1741 certified,” and two of the cheapest battery units we found are 230-volt European models with German tax language still in the description — grey imports that do not belong on a 120-volt American outlet. Not one listing in the entire category claims UL 3700. Several substitute an IP65 rating for a safety certification, which is a bit like advertising that your car is waterproof.

Amazon’s own ranking doesn’t understand the category either. Search “balcony solar kit” and the badged pick is a 12-volt RV starter kit that can’t be plugged into a wall at all.

So what is worth buying there?

Three things, honestly.

1. A complete PluggedSolar kit, if you want the Prime safety net. They’ve been selling plug-in solar since 2012, they’re a real California company, and theirs is the only listing in the category making a UL 1741 claim. The 800W kit runs $1,395 on Amazon, and there’s an 1,800W version at $3,995. One caveat that costs us money to tell you: their own site has run the 800W kit for far less than the Amazon price. Check pluggedsolar.com before you buy, and use Amazon only if returns and two-day shipping are worth the difference to you.

2. An AUECOOR kit, if you want cheap and complete. The 600W kit is $599 and the 1,200W is $1,099. No certification claims and no reviews yet, so buy these with clear eyes — but they are genuine complete kits with panels included, which is rarer on Amazon than you’d think.

3. The parts around the panel. This is where Amazon genuinely shines, and where most people underbuy. An adjustable tilt mount claws back a real slice of the output a vertical railing costs you. A proper weatherproof 12-gauge outdoor extension cord is not optional. And a plug-in energy monitor turns a vague sense that it’s working into a number you can check — genuinely the most satisfying $25 in this whole hobby.

What to skip: any inverter whose listing substitutes an IP rating for a safety certification, anything priced in a way that suggests a European import (look for 230V in the copy), and single microinverters sold as “kits” with no panels included. The one bare inverter we’d make an exception for is the Enphase IQ8+ at $175, which is genuinely UL listed — though it’s a rooftop part, not a plug-in one, so it belongs in a different project.

The certification question, answered honestly

If you read one section, make it this one, because it’s where most of the internet is currently wrong.

Hoymiles’ HiFlow Pro and the APsystems EZ1 both carry UL 3700 through CSA Group. That’s the box that converts your panel’s power and disconnects it safely, and it’s the part regulators worried about most.

Not one kit — panel, inverter, cable and mount together in one box — has been certified to UL 3700 by anybody, which pv magazine confirmed again in August. Buying a kit today means buying certified components in an uncertified assembly.

The reason
The parts to finish the job don’t exist yet

IEEE Spectrum reported in July that some UL 3700 requirements may not be solvable right now: the bidirectional GFCI disconnects the standard calls for aren’t commercially available, and no panels currently meet it. This is a supply-chain problem, not a paperwork one.

The practical consequence: if you live in New York, Maine, or Vermont, your state’s law requires whole-system certification that does not yet exist, so responsible sellers won’t ship to you. Bright Saver says so on their own website rather than taking your money, which we think deserves more credit than it gets. New Jersey’s new law — signed September 1 and effective March 2027 — has the same requirement, so it’s a question worth watching there too. Our state tracker has the details for all fifty.

Should you buy now or wait?

Usually we’d say wait: prices fall, certifications land, and there’s no rush. This autumn there’s a genuine argument the other way.

On August 6, the administration set minimum import prices on solar modules and cells under Section 232, effective December 4. Analysts expect roughly a ten-cent-per-watt increase on panels. On a small kit that’s $35 to $170 — not ruinous, but real, and it lands on a market that has never been cheap here to begin with. Add Bright Saver’s mid-October restock and four-month lead times, and the practical window for today’s prices closes around early December. That inference is ours, not an analyst’s; nobody has modeled the tariff’s effect on kits this small.

The counter-argument is just as real. If whole-system UL 3700 certification arrives, it will make everything simpler and will probably make some of today’s hardware look dated. If you’re in New York, Maine, or Vermont, waiting isn’t a choice anyway.

Where we land: if you’re in one of the nine states where this is settled law and you know where your panel is going, buying before December is defensible. If you’re unsure, or you’re shopping mainly on price, waiting costs you a hundred dollars and buys you a much better market.
